| Thousands of people visited the village of Sabucedo (Pontevedra) for the traditional "Rapa das Bestas" (Shearing of the Beasts) festival which was declared "Of National Touristic Interest" in 1965, and is held during the first weekend of July every year. During the morning 500 wild horses were driven down from the hills into a corral, known as the "curro," where they were branded and had their manes cut.
Although the Sabucedo festival is perhaps the best known, several similar festivals are celebrated throughout the region during the spring and early summer months in a tradition dating back to Roman times. What distinguishes the Sabucedo festival this year are a number of films, conferences and discussion groups being held to discuss how the festival can be promoted and marketed more effectively outside the region.
