| A 22 year old man died during the early hours of this morning after being shot several times by two Local Police officers. The incident occurred at 1.20am when a patrol was sent to the junction of the calles Florista and Garbí to deal with a young man covered in blood who was threatening passers-by with a large machete.
When they arrived at the scene, they were told by one man that they youth had offered him the machete and asked him to attack him with it. Moments later the officers were advised that the same man had been involved in an attack on two National Police officers who were chasing him down the Avenida Cortes de las Valencianas earlier.
The suspect was found hiding in the doorway of a building nearby, but escaped as the two officers approached him to make the arrest. As he was running away, he happened upon a 26 year old man, who tried to escape when he caught sight of the bloody machete. Unfortunately, he tripped over a fence, fell on the floor, and was set upon by the attacker. Fearing for the man´s life, the officers warned the attacker, fired warning shots into the ground in front of them, before firing several shots at him aiming for "non-vital areas," allowing the victim to escape.
The attacker, now on his knees, started to stab himself with the machete, until the officers managed to disarm him. Emergency service medics were abused and physically attacked by the troubled young man who died at the scene. The 26 year old victim is under observation at Valencia´s La Fe Hospital.
