| The regional government of Aragón has been asked to study the possibility of removing four "decapitated Muslim heads" from the heraldic shield on the regional flag by representatives of the Islamic community. The four heads symbol represents the reconquest of Huesca by Pedro I in 1096 following the decisive battle of Alcaraz, and has been a feature of the flag since it was designed in 1984.
The president of the Aragonese government, Marcelino Iglesias, said that he has already consulted with experts in heraldic symbology, and does not think that the change will create any problems, although any modification would have to be approved by a majority in the regional parliament. Mr Iglesias added that, "it is a sensitive issue which concerns us all, especially given our need to encourage the integration of immigrants into our society for the benefit of everyone."
Abdel Kader, general secretary of Zaragoza´s Islamic community, said that the four heads symbol represented "violence, and does not promote tolerance and harmony," adding that there were other images, like water, which would represent the region in a more positive light.
