| Originally known as the La Marina Computer Club the club was started in 2001 and was held in CJ’s bar thanks to the kindness of the owner Chrissie.
We started with one computer (mine) and a lot of hope and enthusiasm. Finding something different to talk about every week was a problem. Soon new faces came along and a committee was elected and away we went. As our equipment increased we outgrew CJ’s and moved to the Eurosports Bar. As this bar was closing down (unbeknown to us) we had to look round for something more permanent. We approached the Mayoress of San Fulgencio who allowed us to move into our present home in the Centro Civico in San Fulgencio. Out of respect for our Spanish friends we became the ‘La Marina and San Fulgencio Computer Club’. Slowly over the years and as funds allowed we increased the number of computers in order to allow our member more ‘hands on’ experience. I have received many phone calls over the past months from people who were afraid to switch the monster on and could our club help? Well the answer to that is yes. We have had many absolute beginners started and some are now manipulating photographs and many other skills they didn’t know they had, word processing, spreadsheets creating their own birthday / Christmas card etc. We seem to have acquired a reputation for helping beginners. Over the years approximately 190 people have been members but for one reason or another, moving venues, illness etc some have dropped out. Currently our membership stands at about 90 but of course they all don’t turn up together. Most of our members, being British drift back and forwards to the UK. We have a catchment area from Alicante to Villa Martin but most members come from the La Marina area.
We hold our meeting every Wednesday, from 11am. - 4.30pm we have beginners lectures from 11 am - 1 pm and at the same time Microsoft Excel and Word. After a well earned break the photography lectures take place, scanning photographs, repairing old worn out pictures of grandma, manipulation of photographs and many other aspects of digital photography. We take our computing very seriously but we have a lot of fun doing it. We also have a social side to the club. During the summer we held a BBQ at our social secretary’s home, with lovely meal , swimming and even karaoke. We have other social events and end our year with the proverbial Christmas Dinner / Dance in December.
We welcome all newcomers with or without computer knowledge. You are welcome to come along for two weeks after which we would expect you to become a member. An admission fee of one euro fifty cents per person is charged. To become a member a charge of 30 euros is required, 15 euros joining fee an 15 euros membership. Come along and see for yourselves, you might like what you see.
