Storms and heavy rain during the last 24 hours has caused widespread damage across the Balearic islands. 885 flashes of lightning were recorded in Mallorca, 290 in Ibiza, and 27 in Menorca.
In the north of Mallorca, 116 litres/m2 of rain fell between 8pm last night and 8am this morning causing flooding and power cuts in the towns of Molí de Son Leu, and Artá (photo), where emergency services report widespread damage to ground floor homes, restaurants, businesses and underground car parks.
The rainfall was less intense in Palma (28 litres/m2), at Menorca airport (21 litres/m2), and Ibiza (11 litres/m2), although heavy rainfall was reported this morning. The national meteorological institute also report snow falls on the islands above 1,100m, and hail storms in many areas.
