| The Lady of Elche International School is committed to providing an invigorating all-round education, which is stimulating, challenging and exciting. Each child is valued as an integral part of the school community and through dynamic teaching, diverse opportunities and considered pastoral care we aim to develop the talents of each pupil in the school. We believe that every pupil can succeed and we strive to ensure that there is a positive energy and an achieving atmosphere in all areas. We nurture confidence in contrast to arrogance and expect consideration, respect and tolerance towards others at all times. The school is divided into the following departments:
• Pre-Prep: Nursery – Year 2 • The Preparatory Department – Years 3-8 • The Senior School – Years 9-13
LEIS opened in early 2004, with just a few pupils. Our role now since we opened for the new term stands at 90 pupils with another 30 joining us after the Christmas break. We have pupils from diverse cultural backgrounds and this pluralism makes for an interesting mix. As there are children from so many different countries, bigotry, bullying and racism have no place in our school. The school has a ‘zero tolerance’ policy when it comes to bullying. Any child caught doing so is automatically expelled. The Valencian autonomous region has along with Catalunya seen an ever-increasing immigration of foreign nationals along with the consequent problems this can bring. The province of Alicante is grossly under-funded where in the Torrevieja area alone over 25% of the children attend schools which are housed in portacabins. It was against this backdrop that the school was set up to provide a quality education in a changing world. Many of the children who have joined us at the school have come form local private or state schools, where they were either suffering bullying or their parents were unhappy with the level of education being offered. LEIS offers a truly bilingual education where in the pre-preparatory department (Nursery, Reception, years 1-2) and preparatory department (Years 3-8) almost 50% of the curriculum time is in Spanish. This balance changes when the child reaches the senior part of the school where it is 70% in English and 30% in Spanish. Children have the opportunity to sit for the London Board Qualifications with EDEXCEL as the school is a centre for these exams. The schools offers GCSE and IGCSE with children being able to go onto A Levels or International Baccalaureate. LEIS believes children's achievements in areas such as drama, sport, music and non-core subjects should also be communicated across the sectors. I am a great believer that if you do not know a child is strong in sport or the arts, how do you know how to engage them from the beginning? We believe in trying to find areas where a child can excel and use this to cascade down into other subjects that they may not be as able at, but will attack with increased motivation. To this end, we prepare individual study plans for each child in order for them to focus in on areas that require extra attention. LEIS also has on its staff 3 full-time learning support teachers whose job is to not only help those who may need extra support in a subject, but to also provide teachers with strategies for the most able. Children arriving new into the school with very little Spanish or English go into our immersion programme, where specially trained teachers bring them up to speed in the weaker language in order to ease the process of integration. The school has a proper house system, to which all children and staff belong to. Besides, children receive a weekly effort grade on a 1-5 scale as well an attainment system, where termly and half termly grades are given. The school’s schemes of work follow in the preparatory department those laid down by the Independent schools Examination Board and the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which in turn follow that national curriculum. In the senior school our schemes follow the National curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4. The school is in the process of its accreditation being processed for the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS) as well as applying to become an overseas member of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS).
