Terrorists firebomb home of Basque socialist councillor
By:
ThinkSpain , Saturday, June 18, 2005

Joseba Markaido, the PSE-EE councillor whose home in Bernago was subjected to a molotov cocktail attack last night, said that the incident was a "neofascist" act and part of of strategy to "use fear as an ideological weapon." The councillor has been the target of numerous ETA attacks and threats, said this morning that "he is angry and ashamed at the way the PP is making political capital out of terrorist victims" while socialists are "suffering this kind of martyrdom."

The attack took place at around 1.30am this morning shortly after Mr Markaido and his wife had gone to bed. A number of molotov cocktails were thrown at the couple´s home and the attackers tried to push one through the kitchen window, which ended up in the interior patio. Fortunately, nobody was injured, no substantial damage was caused and Mr Markaido managed to put out the blaze himself without needing to trouble emergency services.
