| Lekeito´s week-long San Antolín festival reached its climax yesterday with the celebration of the traditional "Antzar Eguna" (Day of the Geese) contest. The objective is for one of the team to pull the head off a dead goose suspended high above the water on a rope. One of the team is bounced up and down by tensing a rope held by the rest of the team until he either succeeds in ripping off the goose´s head or falls into the water. The winning team is the one that decapitates the goose most quickly.
The Day of the Geese contest has been held during the San Antolín festival since 1877, being held previously either during the San Roque or Andra Mari festival in August. Whereas the contest used to be held in the town´s main square, it has been held over water since 1722. Apparently, it is traditional to settle any dispute about the winner with a rowing race round San Nicolás island out in the middle of Lekeitio bay.
