Mountaineer dies in ski resort avalanche
ONE person has died and two have been seriously injured in an avalanche this morning in Rioseta, near the ski resort of Candanchú (Huesca).
Those affected by the avalanche were from two tour groups from Madrid and Valencia – three of which were mountaineers climbing the Pico del Águila, and four skiers.
The avalanche occurred just before noon near the army barracks and close to the ski station.
Guardia Civil officers have rescued the body of one of the mountaineers, whose identity has not yet been revealed.
The deceased's two companions suffered injuries, one with a broken leg.
Another four caught up in the avalanche managed to escape by themselves.
Rescuers say the mountaineer who died is the seventh fatal victim of avalanches in Spain this year, thought to be caused by the unusually heavy snow.
January 10 was the worst day for such incidents, with Guardia Civil officers finding the bodies of three mountaineers from Navarra who had disappeared the day before in Villanúa (Huesca).
Another mountain-climber died in an avalanche on February 2 and, the following day, two climbers lost their lives when they became trapped whilst trying to scale a wall of ice in the Vall de Boí, in the Lérida Pyrénées.
