Reginalds Tower bar and restaurant
By thinkSPAIN Team Fri, Aug 22, 2003
Few, if any, bars and restaurants on the Costa Blanca can claim an overseas heritage. However, Reginalds Tower, Comercial La Regia, Orihuela Costa is one such case in point.
The name comes from a well-known landmark in Waterford City in the south east of Ireland. Situated on the banks of the River Suir, a tower has stood on the site for more than a thousand years. Originally part of the town’s medieval defences, it now houses a museum. The tower gave its name to a nearby bar and this provides us with our first clue as to the background of its Spanish counterpart.
Reginalds Tower is an Anglo-Irish partnership between Jim & Blondina Walsh (both from Waterford) and Phil and Jackie Lipscombe (who previously lived in Kent). Following their move to Spain, the two couples and their families soon became friends and this led to them forming a business relationship and to the opening of Reginalds Tower on (not surprisingly) March 17, 2003.
The choice of name was no mere coincidence, as Blondina’s brother-in-law was a co-owner of the original Reginalds Bar in Waterford (since converted to a dance venue). This provided an opportunity to secure some of the original bar fittings and to transport these to Spain, hence the somewhat unusual sight of a certain armour suited character who stands guard just inside the door of the bar. He must have many stories to tell of his previous life in Waterford! With the benefit of so many unusual fittings, Reginalds Tower has a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The bar is proving very popular amongst the many Irish and English who live nearby. A further attraction is the varied menu of nightly entertainment and this ranges from Karaoke to a disco night to a quiz night. The Karaoke is run by Phil and Jackie (as PHYJA) and is unusual in that a video camera is linked to two televisions and allows the performers to see themselves live on screen. Phil and Jackie are very accomplished singers and they cater for a wide range of musical tastes.
The Wednesday Quiz night is also proving very popular and genial quizmaster Dave has questions on such topics as general knowledge, sports, TV & films, famous people (a picture quiz) and music. There is something to suit everyone and a wonderful night’s entertainment. Entry to the quiz is only five euros per team and there is a cash prize for the winners.
Reginalds Tower also caters for the younger set with its disco nights on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The music ranges from R&B to garage to house. Whatever happened to John Travolta and Saturday Night Fever?
In conversation with the quartet of owners, they spoke enthusiastically of soon completing the kitchen area and starting to serve food. An extensive menu is planned and this will include all day breakfasts and the ever popular Sunday Roast. They also have expansion plans for the downstairs area of the bar.
The many happy customers of Reginalds Tower all speak of the warm and friendly manner of Jim, Blondina, Phil and Jackie and this has seen the popularity of the bar grow steadily over the short few months since its opening.
The CB Friday extends their very best wishes to Reginalds Tower and we look forward to visiting again very soon.
Blondina (whose name is of Dutch origin) would like to dedicate this review to the memory of her daughter Tracey.
