Teacher's rant at lazy students goes viral
By thinkSPAIN Team Sun, Jun 22, 2014
A TEACHER'S furious vitriol at her students for their appalling exam papers has gone viral on the internet.
The physics tutor, based at an unnamed Spanish university, pinned up a note next to the results board which was photographed by students – although it is not known whether they were her own pupils – and uploaded onto social network sites, eventually working its way around the world.
A complete translation of the message – which has now been read by thousands of Spaniards across the country – complete with capital letters, is as follows.
“Aren't you ashamed of yourselves?”
“As you can see, I have just posted the results of the end-of-term Physics Level II exams. I can do nothing less than point out my deepest disgust at what I have had to read in the last few days: It is no longer a question of not knowing or even not doing, but of the veritable NONSENSE that many of you put in writing, not to mention spelling mistakes so bad they made my eyes bleed, and filthy, revolting papers full of Tippex, words scrubbed out, unfinished sentences, equations all over the place lacking in sense or explanation, a total absence of a common thread, appalling essays and labyrinths of illegible handwriting.
“One would assume that you are university students who, within a few years, will be taking over the reins of, and working for, society. Do you know just what impression you're giving with your exam papers?
“I'm embarrassed to have to post this results list – I assure you from the bottom of my heart that I'm deeply ashamed and that all those exams which have scraped 40 per cent have had to be marked twice with a magnifying glass in an attempt to find some tiny detail that might have allowed me to increase their final grade. The burning question is: Aren't you ashamed of yourselves? I've seen papers claiming ice melts at 100ºC, at 6.66ºC and at -20ºC...AT WHAT TEMPERATURE DOES ICE MELT, FOR GOD'S SAKE? Or is it that you don't know what the word 'melt' means? (Something that would really worry me to death). Primary laws of thermodynamics which relate electrical work with charge – WITH CHARGE!!! WHAT CHARGE? - described as light in spiral movement. HAVE YOU EVER ACTUALLY SEEN THIS? Non-luminous light sources. WHAT IS THAT? I won't go on because the list of idiocies goes on ad infinitum. And I haven't just seen these 'creative ideas' once, but on numerous occasions and with some of you, several dozen times. AREN'T YOU ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES?
“I hope and trust that this disaster serves as a learning curve for your retakes; that you will produce clean, orderly, tidy, properly-written exam papers without spelling mistakes or childish nonsense, and that above all, you revise for them like the university students, the ADULTS, that you are. As students, you are in a very privileged place during these harsh times, and that means you are expected to study for eight hours a day, to work like any other employee 11 months of the year – something that, however much you swear to me you are actually doing, I simply do not believe based upon the vast majority of what I have just read.
“It would not be fair of me to only mention the disastrous papers I have found – even though those are the overwhelming majority, as you'll see from the results list – since there have been exams which have been a true delight to mark, written by those of you who demonstrate with sound evidence exactly how much you have studied and how much effort you have made throughout the year. My sincerest congratulations to all of you, and thank you for your hard work.
“And if a few of you can do it, why can't the rest of you? Think about it, please. Carry out some self-analysis, self-criticism, be brave enough to be honest with yourselves and do something to remedy it in time. Otherwise, don't bother continuing to slave away at something that's basically way above your head, if that's the conclusion you come to.
“I repeat that you are privileged individuals in these times of hardship and that it is downright immoral the way so many of you waste your resources and potential. As a grandmother, I will tell you something that I'm sure you've been told many times before: You'll never again have the youth, strength, opportunities or potential that you have today, so use it before you regret having thrown it away.
“I am absolutely appalled and, to be utterly frank, furious. For this reason, and because of other work I have to do, that I would prefer to take time out to cool down and leave revision for your retakes until Monday 16th. If you come in to re-read your papers, take note of what you've written, read the coursebook, and analyse your answers to the questions. I'm not prepared to repeat myself umpteen times – and I'm going to force some of you to read out loud in class what you've written in your exams.
“I hope you give me a bit more joy in the retakes.
