Man locks wife in flat and sets building alight
A COSTA Brava man has been arrested for trying to murder his wife by locking her in a room and setting fire to the house.
The Mossos d'Esquadra – Catalunya's answer to the Guardia Civil – were alerted about a fire in a flat halfway up a block in Salt (Girona province), at number 30 of he C/ Torras i Bages, at around 16.00hrs on New Year's Day.
A neighbour helped in the rescue operations, calling emergency services, telling police that the woman, a 37-year-old Spanish national, was inside and aiding them in getting her out.
Firefighters found her locked in a room with no way out of the burning building.
Her husband, a Moroccan citizen aged 42, was taken into custody.
Both occupants were treated for smoke inhalation at a health centre first, then the husband was charged with attempted murder, arson, actual bodily harm, and threatening behaviour.
It took an hour to put the blaze out, by which time the apartment was totally destroyed and the 25 residents in the other flats in the five-storey block had to be temporarily rehoused.
Part of the structure has suffered damage, including the ceiling, and a dividing wall between the block and a neighbouring shop has had to be shored up.
The arrested man has an existing criminal record for domestic violence, according to the Mossos d'Esquadra.
