A FUNDAMENTALIST terrorism supporter believed to have been behind the 9/11 attacks in the USA has been arrested in the town of El Espinar in the centre-northern province of Segovia, in Castilla y León.
The accused, 43, is said to have been involved in raising funds for the Jihad movement, and has been under an arrest warrant issued by authorities in Egypt, his native country, for nearly 15 years.
Hakem Mohktar Abdallah is believed to be linked with the terrorist network broken up in Hamburg, Germany in 2002 which was thought to be the brains behind the Twin Towers disaster when two aeroplanes were hijacked on September 11, 2001.
Abdallah is said to have operated in France and Germany in attempting to amass cash for the terror movement.
He had already been arrested in Germany for his connections with the 9/11 terror organisation, but released with charges pending further inquiries – although he went on the run while the case was still under investigation.
The suspect is said to have ties to Spain, the nature of which has not been confirmed but may relate to family or property.
International cooperation was key in tracing him to Segovia, says the Guardia Civil (pictured).
