Ban on brothel advertising in newspapers lifted 'due to economic crisis'
A BAN on advertising sexual services in newspapers and media websites has been lifted 'because of the recession' after a proposal put forward by the opposition in Parliament was seconded.

Legislation regulating publicity and advertising was due to be amended to formally prohibit classifieds placed by brothels, escort agencies or individuals acting as prostitutes, but the plan has now been scrapped.

However, the PP government continues to seek some way of eventually outlawing adverts of this type without putting the communication media under even more strain.

The health ministry, which incorporates the department for equality, says its main concern is eradicating exploitation of women and human trafficking as far as possible.

Advertising for sexual services earned the press around 40 million euros a year, according to a report released in 2007.
