A SIX-YEAR-OLD child has lost his life after being run over by a float during the Three Kings procession in Málaga.
He was said to have been trying to pick up one of the sweets thrown from the floats into the crowd when he was knocked down by the float carrying the Magi's court attendants, before the parade had even properly started.
According to the city council, the float had all safety measures in place and the parade was fully staffed with security personnel, including two Civil Protection squad members and two Local Police officers, plus 12 trained volunteers.
Ambulance staff were on standby, but paramedics' attempts to resuscitate the boy after his heart stopped and he ceased to breathe were in vain.
Authorities decided not to suspend the procession, because it could have led to a major public disorder as there were 'tens of thousands' of spectators on the streets, but the traditional offering to the Three Kings was called off.
Two days of mourning – Sunday and Monday – were declared in the city.
Full investigations are to be carried out and the city hall has passed on its condolences to the family.
