Ex-Judge Garzón, Complutense University Dean and others offer support to PSOE to 'overthrow the PP'
NUMEROUS well-known personalities in the legal, political and academic world have written to socialist leader Alfredo Pérez-Rubalcaba (pictured) offering their support in 'bringing down the right-wing'.
They include former National Court judge Baltasar Garzón, who was struck off after it was found he ordered telephone-tapping in his investigations into the massive Gürtel corruption trial involving high-level politicians, actions which implicated many of them.
Others include Pilar Río, chairwoman of the José Saramago Foundation, in honour of the author, as well as Dean of Madrid's Complutense University Dr José Carrillo, union bosses, business owners, and former leaders of the left-wing party Izquierda Unida (United Left).
Their open letter to Rubalcaba says the PP is 'taking advantage of the financial crisis' in order to 'push unemployment and social exclusion to greater and greater portions of society'.
Rubalcaba has thanked those who signed the letter, via Facebook.
All signatories of the letter want to attend the next socialist political party conference – due to be held this coming weekend – to undertake a 'positive debate' which is 'necessary for the majority of the population', to offer to take an active part in 'agreeing new policies and new ways of effecting them' in accordance with 'what society is asking us for'.
“It is essential, and urgent, that we reverse the destruction of basic rights that the PP is effecting through its funding cuts,” the letter states.
“These are times when cooperation, strength in numbers and involvement are needed,” Rubalcaba replied to the signatories collectively on his Facebook site.
He says those who offered to attend the party political conference will 'enrich its debates'.
