A POPULAR Catalunya theme park is due to open a new area dedicated to the Ferrari Formula 1 Grand Prix racing team in tribute to home-grown twice-world champion Fernando Alonso.
Port Aventura, in Tarragona, plans to set up Ferrari Land in 2016 at a cost of around 100 million euros, with activities, rides and attractions for all ages.
These will include the fastest and highest vertical accelerator in Europe, and a Ferrari-themed hotel with 250 suites, Formula 1-related restaurants, souvenir shops, and racing car simulators.
Port Aventura is the second-largest theme park resort in Europe and the biggest in the Mediterranean basin.
Ferrari Land will be based upon a similar area of a major theme park in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (pictured above left).
The massive Ferrari World in the Middle Eastern city, located near the Yas Marina circuit, was officially opened in 2010 by Fernando Alonso and his then colleague, Brazil's Felipe Massa, who will drive for Williams this year after he was booted out of the Italian team and replaced by Finland's Kimi Räikkönen.
Back in Tarragona, before the Alonso-themed complex is set up, Port Aventura has plans for this year's expansion which include the 'Angkor', a boat that takes visitors into a leafy forest where they face multiple adventures, and the Kooza show from the Paris-based Cirque du Soleil will be installed at the resort later in 2014.
