HIGH-SPEED rail services between Spain's largest two cities and France have been snapped up by half a million passengers in less than nine months, reveals the transport board.
RENFE short-haul and medium-distance train fares frozen for 2017
03/01/2017
TRAIN fares for outer suburban lines and medium-distance inter-provincial journeys will be frozen in 2017 – good news for commuters and regular travellers, according to rail board RENFE.
As yet, though, it is not known whether the long-distance high-speed rail services AVE, Euromed, Altaria and ALVIA will raise their ticket costs.
Medium-distance trains in fact cover fairly long-haul journeys, such as Valencia to Madrid which is over 300 kilometres, but are a much slower way of travelling as they stop at numerous stations en route and involve at least one change.
However, they are typically half the price of the much faster ones, sometimes even less.
The Cercanías trains cover the outer suburban lines, normally up to an hour's journey away from zone 1 or the central metropolitan area they branch from.
The Rodalías lines cover journeys within the same or neighbouring provinces.
All three of these will cost the same this year as last year.
These three lines transported the bulk of 2016's rail passengers – a total of 323 million nationwide out of the overall figure of 347.5 million who travelled on the RENFE network.
