OUTER space and the Bronze Age do not sit well in the same sentence – they may both have existed at the same time, but anyone based on Earth back then would not have known much, or anything, about what lies beyond.
Mobile World Congress 2017 opens in Barcelona
27/02/2017
THIS year's Mobile World Congress opened today (Monday) in Barcelona with over 2,000 stands from top telecommunications technology companies, and expects to beat last year's record of 101,000 visitors by the time it closes on Thursday.
The planet's largest mobile phone trade fair, officially opened by King Felipe VI and Catalunya regional president Carles Puigdemont, the MWC 2017 features globally-renowned manufacturers such as Sony, ZTE, Ericsson, Panasonic and Acer, plus major operators such as Vodafone and even the car producers Seat and Ford.
King Felipe, Puigdemont and other regional politicians including Barcelona's mayoress Ada Colau visited the GSMA stand – the fair organisers – and the Spanish Pavilion and its regional versions, such as that of Catalunya, as well as pavilions from other exhibiting countries.
They took a tour of the bases for Mobile World Capital Barcelona, Telefónica, Orange and Vodafone, and held meetings with representatives from Huawei, Samsung, Google and Turkcell.
Most of the main brands, particularly Nokia and LG, presented their latest creations the day before the fair opened, but many more were shown off today.
Among these was Sony's new top-of-the-range SmartPhone, the XZ Premium, and the Chinese manufacturer ZTE announced it was due to launch its latest Blade, the V8, in Spain in mid-March at a price of €269.
Panasonic showcased its new convertible two-in-one 12” laptop, the Thoughtbook CF33, and Taiwan-based manufacturer Acer demonstrated its Air Monitor, which gives real-time air-quality information and allows users to control their home air-conditioning remotely.
Vodafone Spain's CEO, Antonio Coimbra, announced it was working hard on adjusting its user tariffs to make them more competitive, whilst Ericsson, 20th Century Fox and Telstra described their planned pilot study to allow mobile users to personalise their handset content using an App.
Telefónica and Ericsson gave the world's first-ever demonstration of driving a car remotely using 5G, and the former – along with NEC, Qualcomm, Cisco, Kaspersky and Wikipedia are due to give further presentations and exhibitions tomorrow (Tuesday).
