Rafa Nadal through to 10th Roland Garros final after gruelling defeat of Dominic Thiem
11/06/2017
SPANISH tennis ace Rafa Nadal has netted a place in the Paris Open final for the 10th time, and the pressure will be on as he has never yet failed to win the title at the French capital's Roland Garros stadium.
After a sound defeat of Austria's Dominic Thiem in a gruelling two-hour, seven-minute match ending on 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0, the Mallorca-born star will face Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka in the final round.
Wawrinka had an immensely tough battle on his hands, beating world number one Andy Murray in an epic five sets to earn his own slot in the final.
As for Rafa, he won all three sets against Thiem and only let 29 games escape him – six fewer than in 2008 where he reached the final after having ceded 35.
But the record goes to Sweden's Björn Börg, who got into the final round in 1978 with just 27 games lost.
Nadal congratulated Thiem for his staying power, and foresees a very hard game against Wawrinka who, the Spaniard says, is playing 'incredible tennis' at the moment.
The Roland Garros final will not just be a duel for the Paris Open title, but also for the world number two slot, which will automatically go to whoever wins.
Rafa is already guaranteed the ATP number three position – his best ranking since March 2015 – and a Roland Garros win will give him his highest standing since October 2014.
Wawrinka's exhausting match against Murray ended on 6-7(6), 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3) and 6-1 and, if the Swiss player manages to wrench Rafa's 10th Paris Open title off him, he will reach the world number two slot and the highest ranking since 2015.
This will be the 19th match against Wawrinka and Nadal – the second final since the former won his first Grand Slam in the Australian Open in 2014.
To date, Rafa has beaten Stan Wawrinka 15 out of 19 times, of which five have been on clay, where Wawrinka managed to beat him once despite the Manacor-born player being almost invincible on this surface.
Rafa has already beaten Wawrinka once at the Roland Garros – in the quarter-finals in 2013 – but both are said to be playing an excellent tournament at the moment in Paris, so the Spaniard's 10th title is by no means in the bag as yet.
