Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Winter wonderland in Girona as rest of Spain swelters
02/07/2017
FIREFIGHTERS were still bailing out garages, car parks and ground-floor buildings in the city of Girona last night (Saturday) after a freak hailstorm covered the streets in a blanket of white on Friday.
While the rest of Spain was sweltering in tropical temperatures, the Costa Brava capital looked like a winter wonderland scene as 53 litres of frozen rain per square metre – about two-and-a-half inches - fell in less than half an hour.
Several trade premises had to be evacuated – even a shopping centre.
The hail blocked drains, causing the streets to fill up with water once the ice began to melt.
But today (Sunday), temperatures have risen all over the country, and once again Spain is enjoying the kind of weather typical of July – even Girona.
