Police bring down armed man at Melilla border crossing
26/07/2017
A man wielding a knife and shouting "Allah is great" caused a commotion at the Beni-Enzar border crossing in Melilla first thing on Tuesday morning, with one officer ending up with cuts to his hand as a result of the confrontation.
The incident took place at 07:35 hours, when the would-be assailant, a 29-year-old man, approached the border control, "initially in a seemingly normal manner" according to a spokesperson for the regional government.
Once at the border control, he took out the "large" knife and confronted the guard on duty, at which point the other guards reacted "immediately" and managed to bring him down swiftly using a plastic traffic barrier and without having to fire any shots.
Once he was on the ground, the eight border guards pounced on him to immobilise him and it was during the ensuing scuffle that one of them ended up with injuries to his hand.
Police sources have revealed that the same man was prevented from entering Melilla just a few days ago after he caused a similar commotion at the border crossing, although not armed that time.
The government representative for the region, Abdelmalik El Barkani, told a press conference that they were currently checking the man's background for previous offences.
Although the assailant shouted "Allah is great", El Barkani chose to be prudent about the motives behind the attack, reiterating numerous times that they could "not yet either confirm or deny" whether it was a terrorist act and would not do so "until the investigation reached a conclusion based on the facts".
El Barkani took the opportunity to congratulate the officers involved for their "swift" intervention and the fact that their "professionalism" meant that the situation was "under total control in a matter of minutes".
