Barcelona train crash injures 54
28/07/2017
A TRAIN crash in Barcelona has left 54 people injured, 20 of whom are in hospital and one of whom is in a serious condition.
The outer suburban Cercanías line crashed into a platform barrier, causing the front of the train to buckle, and the impact resonating through the train led to the multiple injuries.
Of these, 34 were treated on site and 20 in hospital, where one of them is seriously injured, although not in a life-threatening condition.
Rail infrastructure board ADIF says the Cercanías in the Barcelona area has not been disrupted, is running as normal and an inquiry will be opened into the cause of the crash.
ADIF does not believe it was a case of the train going too fast.
A free helpline has been set up – 900 10 10 20 (add 0034 from outside Spain) for anyone who is concerned about family members or friends they believe may have been on the train.
Anyone travelling by rail anywhere in the country today (Friday) should also be aware that a general strike means 274 trains have been cancelled.
