Residents and tourists applaud police for their quick and courageous work in terror attacks
20/08/2017
HUNDREDS of residents and tourists gathered in Barcelona centre to stage a public applause for Catalunya's military police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, this morning (Sunday) to thank them for their excellent work on the afternoon of the terror attack in the city and in Cambrils (Tarragona province) that night.
A video showing them clapping for the police was uploaded onto Twitter with messages of thanks, not only for their having put their own lives on the line to help the victims and prevent the attacks from becoming much larger, but also for their swift work in catching the terrorists – and for their work in general keeping Spain safe.
A lone female officer is known to have shot down all five terrorists in Cambrils, four of whom died at the scene and a fifth later in custody.
Had she not done so, the attack would have been much larger, since the suspects were all on the loose and wearing suicide belts.
Although she was unable to save the life of 61-year-old Ana María Suárez, from Zaragoza, who died in hospital from injuries inflicted by the terrorists' Audi A3, nor prevent three others from becoming critically injured and a fourth suffering less life-threatening wounds, the Mossos officer almost certainly saved dozens more lives with her quick thinking.
“We want to share with you one of the many shows of support received and which give us the courage to keep on working. Words are not enough. Thank you,” the Mossos wrote in response to the applause video.
