A SPANISH tourist has died in Florence after a chunk of stone from the Basilica di Santa Croce fell on him.
Daniel Testor Schnell, 52, from Barcelona, was inside the iconic church – a popular tourist attraction in the north-western Italian city - with his wife when part of the nave broke off and plunged some 30 metres (97'6"), landing on top of him.
Emergency services were called out at around 14.30 and had to attend to Daniel's distressed wife, but her husband had been killed instantly.
Italian minister of culture Dario Franceschini says an inquiry has been opened to determine how the tragedy could have been allowed to happen and who should be held accountable.
The Basilica (pictured), based in the central Piazza di Santa Croce, was immediately closed after the accident and is not due to open until today (Friday).
One of the most important Franciscan churches in Italy, the Santa Croce houses the tombs of famous historical figureheads including Galileo Galilei and the Renaissance painter Michaelangelo.
