Six-metre waves and Force 9 gales in Balearics and Catalunya

GALE-FORCE winds brought waves of up to six metres (19'6”) in height to the coasts of Menorca and Mallorca yesterday (Wednesday) and Tuesday, and nearly five metres (16'3”) off the Costa Brava.
Force 7 and 8 winds of between 80 and 90 kilometres per hour (50-56mph) battered the Balearic Islands and Catalunya provinces of Barcelona and Lleida, and Force 9 gales hit the province of Girona, reaching up to 110 kilometres per hour (69mph).
Part of the Balearics and most of Catalunya were on 'orange alerts' and the provinces of Huesca and Zaragoza (Aragón) and the region of Navarra were on 'yellow alert' for high winds.
The gales are expected to carry on today (Thursday) but should start to subside, according to the State meteorological agency AEMET.
