Barça thrash Sevilla 5-0 for 30th Copa del Rey crown
22/04/2018
Barcelona, led by an Andrés Iniesta in spectacular form, produced a footballing masterclass to beat Sevilla and win the Copa del Rey for the fourth successive season and a record 30th time overall on Saturday.
Sevilla were already 3-0 down at half-time, with Suárez tapping home Philippe Coutinho's pass to open the scoring in Atlético Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
Lionel Messi doubled the lead before setting up Suárez for the third.
Andres Iniesta added the fourth before Coutinho's penalty sealed Barca's convincing victory, which will help ease the pain of losing to Roma in the Champions League last week.
The undisputed hero of the night was Barça captain, Andrés Iniesta, who is due to make an announcement on his future after being strongly linked with a move to China. Fans from both sides came together to hail his contribution as he left the field just minutes before the end of the match.
Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde, whose first piece of silverware at the helm continued Barca's four-year reign in the competition, admitted he withdrew the maestro in the closing moments to maximise what could be his final performance in the spotlight.
"I made the subsitution because I wanted the people who have enjoyed him play to pay tribute to him.
"It's a pleasure to see him play. He does easy things that are so difficult. I would have given an arm when I was a player to do what Andrés does,"
he added.
Barcelona could complete the domestic double on Sunday if second-placed Atletico Madrid lose to Real Betis.
