15/11/2019
ONCE again, Spain has made its presence felt in the annual TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards – an online poll of the best destinations worldwide and on every continent.
For Europe, the country has three destinations in the top 10 – only Italy and Greece have this many, with the UK, Turkey, Portugal and France having two each.
Barcelona comes in at number five and also enters at number seven in the world's best destinations, the only site in Spain, but also one of just eight in Europe in the top 25.
For Europe's best Travellers' Choice destinations, the island of Mallorca comes ninth and that of Tenerife 10th.
In both lists, London, Paris, Rome and the Greek island of Crete are, in that order, the top four, and the islands of Bali (Indonesia) and Phuket (Thailand) come above Barcelona in the 'world's best'.
Spain's second-largest city beats Istanbul (Turkey), Prague (Czech Republic) and Lisbon (Portugal), in that order.
For Europe, all three Spanish destinations beat Florence (Italy) at number 12 and the Greek islands of Santorini and Rhodes at numbers 11 and 12.
Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Venice (Italy), the island of Corsica (France), Budapest (Hungary), the island of Madeira (Portugal), Malta, Berlin (Germany), Edinburgh (UK), St Petersburg (Russia), Vienna (Austria), Manavgat (Turkey), and Krakow (Poland) make up the rest of the European list.
In it, only Russia, Poland and Spain do not have their capital cities featured.
For the 'world's best' list, Barcelona beats Istanbul, Marrakech (Morocco), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Prague, Siem Reap (Cambodia), New York (USA), Jamaica, Hanoi (Vietnam), Tokyo (Japan), Playa del Carmen on México's east coast, Lisbon, Kathmandu (Nepal), Jaipur (India), Hurghada on Egypt's Red Sea coast, Hong Kong, Cusco (Perú), Sydney (Australia), and Tel Aviv (Israel), from eight to 25 inclusive.
