15/09/2004
Storms and a mini tornado hit the island of Mallorca earlier today causing widespread damage, including floods, fallen trees, damaged buildings, and a power cut which affected 4,000 people.
According to emergency services, basements, garages, and ground floor homes and businesses were flooded in Palma, Muro, Sóller, Valldemossa, and various other villages across the island. No casualties have been reported.
Winds of up to 83km/ hour caused the most serious problems, especially in the port of Valldemossa (photo) where a small tornado lifted roofs of buildings, downed electricity pylons, and tore trees from their roots.
