Aznar launches controversial 11-M video
30/03/2005
The Partido Popular´s Research Foundation (FAES), which is presided over by ex-president José María Aznar, presented a video this morning which, they claim, portrays what actually happened between the Atocha bomb attack on the 11th March 2004 and the general elections three days later.
In a bitter attack on the political left, the video starts by claimings that the main objective of the attack was to bring down the government, and that PSOE leader, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, was the prime beneficiary. The terrorists did not place the bombs with the sole intention of killing people, but also to influence the election result.
For three days, it is alleged, left wingers took full political advantage of the tragedy by sowing the seeds of hatred and confrontation to divide Spanish public opinion. The FAES claims that there was no day of reflection, but one of political coercion.
It is claimed that the attempt to blame the PP for the attack was based on a lie, and one that had clearly been rehearsed months before 11-M. The day before the attack, Zapatero was already making accusations when he said at his final rally: "They lied to us, they tried to deceive us."
The short film concludes with the statement, "The 11-M attack gave the socialists the opportunity to perform the script they had been practising for months." Now that they are in power, they have stopped asking how or why the attacks took place, evidence of which, they claim, was the recent refusal to interview a number of key witnesses.
