Earthquake in Almería province
09/01/2017
AN EARTHQUAKE in the province of Almería last night (Sunday) caused a flood of calls to the 112 emergency hotline, but no damage was reported.
The quake measured 3.2 on the Richter scale – enough to be felt, but not enough to cause damage beyond items falling off shelves – and was located 11 kilometres underground, a distance far enough below the surface to cushion its effects.
Its epicentre was in the town of Laroya, south-west of Albox, and it was recorded at 17.07.
South-eastern mainland Spain sits on a fault line, meaning quakes are common, but they typically reach around 2 or 3 on the Richter scale and most of them are never felt.
