CAM bank widow's son-in-law and suspected murderer gets out of prison on bail
SON-IN-LAW and suspected killer of the CAM bank chairman's widow, Miguel López, is expected to pay a bail bond to get out of custody.
His passport, however, will be confiscated and he will be banned from leaving the country.
López is believed to have shot María del Carmen Martínez, 72, at close range inside her landrover, which was parked on the forecourt of the dealership, Novocar, which the wealthy and well-known family owns.
Her late husband, Vicente Sala, amassed a fortune founding rubber companies in Latin America and was head of the east-coast-based CAM savings bank, now defunct and absorbed by Banco Sabadell.
López's lawyer says the €150,000 bail release has already been deposited with the court, but 'bureaucracy' means it may be some days before it is processed and he is allowed out.
The private prosecution, brought by María del Carmen's son – also called Vicente Sala – had called for López to remain in custody.
A family feud is suspected of being behind the killing, since although María del Carmen was due to, and did, inherit Sala's global empire upon his death, she placed her son in charge and intended for him to be the sole beneficiary and manager of it when she eventually passed away.
This upset her daughters, and her grandchildren allegedly wrote to her saying they 'did not want to see her ever again' because of the 'hurt she had caused their mothers'.
What involvement, if any, López's wife and María del Carmen's daughter had in her death is not known, although López is the sole suspect and the only person to have been remanded in custody.
