Solid Juventus defence keeps Barça out of Champions League semis
20/04/2017
A defensive masterclass by Juventus at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night stopped Barcelona joining Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
With a 3-0 deficit to overcome from the first leg in Italy, Barça pressurised the Juventus goal from the off, but Suárez, Messi and Neymar failed to deliver, sending a plethora of shots wide and forcing Gianluigi Buffon to make only one save in the whole match.
The Italian champions worked tirelessly to stop Barça from scoring with Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini at the heart of the defence showing discipline and aggression in equal measures.
Juventus join Manchester United (2007-08) and Bayern Munich (2012-13) as one of only three teams that have stopped the Catalans scoring in both legs of a Champions League tie.
The Italian side join Monaco, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid in the semi-final stage of the competition. Monaco beat Borussia Dortmund 6-3 on aggregate; Atlético beat Leicester City 2-1 on aggregate; and the holders Real Madrid scraped through a thrilling yet controversial clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. The Spanish side won 6-3 on aggregate after extra time, but photographs and video have since shown that the hero of the night, Cristiano Ronaldo, was offside for two of his three goals.
The draw for the semi-finals will be made at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland at midday on Friday 21st April
The semi-final first legs will take place on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd May, with the returns the following week. The side drawn first in each tie will play the first leg at home.
The National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff will host the final at 20:45CET on Saturday 3rd June.
