Bomb scare at California University while Real Madrid was in residence
16/07/2017
REAL Madrid FC was playing at a university campus which had to be evacuated earlier this week due to a bomb scare, the club has just revealed.
The premier league side was in the USA for pre-season training matches, stationed at the University of California (UCLA) Sunset Canyon Recreation Center and based at the North Athletic Field less than a kilometre away.
A suspect package was found at the centre at 22.11 on Wednesday (06.11 on Thursday mainland Spain time) leading to three halls of residence complexes being evacuated.
The package was discovered after an anonymous telephone call warned a bomb had been planted.
Spokesman for UCLA Brian Haas said the students in question were not necessarily thought to be in danger, but were asked to leave their colleges as a precaution.
The package turned out not to contain explosives and the warning was considered to be a hoax.
Real Madrid's Thursday morning training at 10.00 local time (18.00 mainland Spain time) went ahead as planned, and none of the players had to leave their accommodation.
