Hailstones the size of marbles as freak July storm hits the Basque Country
19/07/2017
WHILE the rest of Spain basked in temperatures hitting the high 20s and low 30s yesterday (Tuesday), a Christmas card scene had tourists and residents in the Basque cities of Vitoria and Bilbao taking photos against a winter wonderland.
Hailstones the size of marbles coated the streets in a white blanket late in the afternoon across the provinces of Vizcaya and. Álava, and a dramatic storm brought dark grey skies and trees down.
Branches flattening the power lines in the town of Legazpia (Guipúzcoa province) left hundreds of residents without electricity for several hours.
Temperatures dropped to between 18ºC and 23ºC – still pleasantly springlike, but considerably lower than usually seen in mid-July.
A 'yellow alert' was issued by the weather office for the whole of the Basque Country yesterday until around 19.00.
