Campers stranded by Balearic storms rescued
10/08/2018
TORRENTIAL rain on the island of Menorca left 16 children and four adults trapped and needing to be rescued by the fire brigade last night (Thursday).
They were camping in the bay in the Trebalúger area when the heavens opened and flash floods appeared, according to emergency services on Twitter today.
All 20 of them were taken to the nearest sports centre where camp beds were set up for them for the night.
The deluge led to 18 emergency call-outs across the Balearic Islands over Thursday night and this morning, with ground-floor premises flooded and cars and people trapped.
Elsewhere in the country, isolated storms and rainfall have been forecast, but aside from a few pockets, the weather has seen little change and remains hot and humid.
On the Mediterranean, temperatures sit just below 30ºC but with a 'real feel' of around 35ºC and humidity levels of between 85% and 90%.
Split-second bursts of rain have been reported once or twice a day this week, but generally, these are over in a flash and do little or nothing to clear the air.
