Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Deep freeze: Temperatures plummet and up to a metre of snow in north
26/10/2018
THE MERCURY is set to drop by as much as 10ºC between today (Friday) and Sunday, and mountains in the northern half of the mainland are on yellow alert for snow – which could reach a metre (3'3”) in depth, according to State meteorological agency, AEMET.
On the Mediterranean, current temperatures – ranging from 22ºC to 26ºC in the middle of the day – will fall to between 12ºC and 14ºC over the weekend, rising back up to between 17ºC and 19ºC by the early part of the week, and rain is very likely on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday.
But this is more than bearable, even for homes with no heating system: residents in Madrid are bracing themselves for the chill with highs not expected to go above 11ºC between Friday and Sunday.
In Pamplona and Burgos, thermometers will plunge to 12ºC and 10ºC respectively in the warmest part of the day.
Aragón, especially the Pyrénéen province of Huesca and the southern province of Teruel, will see Friday's relatively warm 22ºC drop to between 5ºC and 9ºC, with nights just slipping into minus figures.
Rain and thunder storms on the Costa del Sol will not bring the temperatures much below 22ºC until Sunday onwards, when the next few days will mean coats coming out of the wardrobe: highs of just 14ºC to 16ºC are forecast, and nights will drop to between 8ºC and 9ºC.
Down from 17ºC on the north coast of the mainland, Saturday onwards will bring rain and temperatures of between 10ºC and 12ºC in the day, falling to around 7ºC at night.
Snow in Pyrénéen peaks could reach a metre in depth, and also in the mountains of Cantabria and Asturias, Teruel, eastern Castilla y León and to the west of the Greater Madrid region.
Frost and ice, especially overnight, are likely in inland parts of the northern half of the mainland.
Torrential rain is predicted in the far west of Andalucía, and even the usually-mild Canary Islands will not escape, with storms on the forecast.
The cold snap is the result of a mass of polar air crossing the country, starting from the north and west, says AEMET.
