KING Felipe VI's annual Christmas Eve speech once again included a covert appeal to secessionist politicians, as well as raising concerns about young adults' struggle to afford housing and violence against women.
Royal Christmas card released
10/12/2018
SPAIN'S Royal family has released its official Christmas card – and, instead of a festive theme, this year's features a photograph of them standing on the edge of a mountain above a lake following Princess Leonor's first engagement as number one heir to the throne.
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and their daughters Leonor, 13 and the Infanta Sofía, 11, are in Asturias, where Princess Leonor presided over the 13th centenary of the founding of the Kingdom of the same name at the eighth-century Covadonga Basilica where, legend has it, an image of the Virgin Mary was found.
The Crown Princess also headed up the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Covadonga Mountain National Park, where the above photograph – supplied by the Royal Household – was taken.
HRH Leonor's first official engagement was in exactly the same spot as where her father – who has been King Felipe VI since his father, King Juan Carlos I, abdicated in June 2014 – symbolically took possession of the title of Prince of Asturias 41 years earlier.
Although it was an important moment for the newly-teenaged future Queen, she was accompanied by her parents and younger sister during the act.
Rex Emeritus Juan Carlos I and his wife, the retired Queen Sofía – after whom the Infanta Sofía is named – have also published their annual Christmas card to the nation, a simple close-up shot of the former heads of State in smart suits.
