Debate over banning short-distance flights takes off, but the cons outweigh the pros
Brace yourselves: Weekend brings cold snap with freezing temperatures
04/01/2019
A CHILLY start to the New Year will see Spanish residents reaching for their thermals from tomorrow (Friday) as the mercury is set to plunge below zero for the first time this winter across the country.
Thick fog will engulf the provinces of Albacete, Madrid, Huesca (Aragón), Barcelona, Lleida and Girona over the first weekend of 2019, and temperatures are expected to drop to as little as -6ºC or even -8ºC overnight in many inland areas.
The coldest provinces will be Madrid, Barcelona and Lleida (Catalunya), Teruel and Zaragoza (Aragón), Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha), Ourense (Galicia), and Salamanca, Soria, Segovia and Ávila (Castilla y León).
Black ice is very likely in inland areas, and traffic authorities advise staying at home unless it is absolutely necessary to drive.
Using snow chains or snow tyres, driving slowly and with caution, and checking tyres, anti-freeze and brakes are strongly advised.
Before going out in areas with sub-zero temperatures, drivers should ensure they have warm clothing, blankets, food and drink, a mobile phone and charger – and, ideally, a spare battery – in case they break down or become trapped in sudden snowfall.
Should this happen, occupants of the vehicle should remain inside with the heaters on – having first checked the exhaust pipe is not blocked, as this could lead to toxic fume inhalation – and call emergency services.
State meteorological agency AEMET has urged everyone to keep an eye on elderly, sick or disabled relatives, friends and neighbours, and those who live alone or in isolated areas.
Even in parts of the country which typically experience milder winters, such as the south and Mediterranean coasts, average night temperatures will range between just 3ºC and 6ºC, with a chill factor or ‘real feel’ of between -2ºC and 1ºC.
Daytime temperatures will be less drastic on the whole, with the Mediterranean and south coast hovering between 12ºC and 16ºC, and conditions are expected to remain mostly dry all next week.
At the same time as the freezing climate and fog, possible tidal surges are expected in the Balearic Islands, off the Costa Brava, and off the coast of the province of A Coruña (Galicia).
The cold snap is predicted to continue until at least the middle of January, AEMET says.
