El Niño winning number: 37142
06/01/2019
ANYONE who misses out on the famous annual El Gordo Christmas lottery gets another chance in January – the El Niño national draw has slightly lower prizes, but higher odds.
Drawn every year on the Three Kings, as the Epiphany is known in Spain – always a bank holiday after festive gifts are given out the night before – the El Niño carries a top prize of €2 million for a winning ticket and €750,000 for second place.
Tickets cost €200, meaning most players buy a décimo, or tenth of a ticket, at €20, so today's jackpot winners will receive €200,000 and second-placed number combinations attract a payout of €75,000.
This year's winning number is 37142, and has landed entirely in Barcelona – in fact, in one lottery shop, on the Travessera de Gràcia, appropriately named La Sort, or 'The Luck' in catalán.
Second prize has gone to ticket number 61776 and, unlike the winning combination, is scattered all over the country – décimo-holders who are now €75,000 better off are based in La Fresneda and Oviedo (Asturias), Palma de Mallorca,´the Castilla y León towns of Miranda de Ebro (Burgos province) and Las Navas del Marqués (Ávila province), A Coruña (Galicia), Rivas-Vaciamadrid (Madrid), Morón de la Fronera (Sevilla province, Andalucía), Ajalvir (Madrid), Mojácar (Almería, Andalucía), Tudela (Navarra), Cáceres (Extremadura), O Porriño (Pontevedra province, Galicia), Granadilla de Abona (Tenerife), Los Navalucillos (Toledo province) and Albacete (both in Castilla-La Mancha), Bornos and Cádiz (Cádiz province), Santander (Cantabria), Manises and Xirivella (Valencia province), El Vendrell (Tarragona province) Barcelona, and Barcelona-province owns of Mataró, Les Franqueses del Vallés, Esplugues de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat.
It is very likely some of the prizewinners will be expats, probably including some Brits: lottery shops in the Alicante-province towns of Benidorm and Benijófar sold décimos bearing the number 61776, worth €75,000 each.
There may also be some second-placed Brits in Calañas (Huelva province), Málaga, Fortuna (Murcia), and in the Canary Island towns of Teror, Tías, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Playa de las Américas, San Cristóbal de la Laguna, Poris de Abona, Arico, San Miguel de Abona, San Sebastián de la Gomera, Santa Cruz de la Palma, Fuencaliente and Las Galletas,
Third prize, for a quarter of a million euros or €25,000 a décimo, has gone to number 20148, all of which were sold in the Barcelona-province town of Sabadell.
Fourth prize tickets are worth just €350 a décimo, and applicable to any combination ending in 3297 or 3905, whilst those ending in 245, 647, 932, 172, 586, 446, 200, 028, 149, 154, 397, 515, 129, 791 are worth €100 a décimo.
Non-winning décimo combinations ending in 58, 18, 00, 78, or 95 win €40, and any not included in the above which end in 8 or 0 receive €20, which is effectively a refund on the purchase price.
Thanks to a law change, El Niño lottery wins under €20,000 are now tax-exempt and, for larger wins, only anything over €20,000 is taxable at 20%.
This time last year, any wins over €2,500 would have been taxed at 20%.
