KING Felipe VI's annual Christmas Eve speech once again included a covert appeal to secessionist politicians, as well as raising concerns about young adults' struggle to afford housing and violence against women.
Sánchez to march in Bastille Day parade
05/07/2019
SPANISH president Pedro Sánchez has been invited to join the parade in Paris for the July 14 celebrations, known as 'Bastille Day'.
Referred to by the French simply by the date – Le Quatorze Juillet – Bastille Day is one of the country's biggest festivals and even the smallest villages let off fireworks and organise live music and open-air discos.
French president Emmanuel Macron (left of picture) has invited Sánchez (right) to join in, along with leaders of other countries which make up the new European defence initiative – a pooling of military resources to create a stronger front to deal with international conflict where needed, but which has been erroneously referred to as 'the European Army'.
Sources from the Moncloa Palace, Spain's official presidential residence, confirm Sánchez has accepted the invitation and will join in the military march in which France's Armed Forces fly their national flag.
Spain will send a forces parade of its own to Paris, as well as planes and helicopters for an air show.
The main march sets off along the Champs Élysées during the day, and the partying takes place in the evening until late – normally outside if the weather permits, and sometimes even if it does not; it is not unheard of for members of the French public to be seen dancing at open-air gigs in the rain on the Quatorze Juillet.
