Ground staff strike planned at Barcelona airport
12/07/2019
IBERIA ground staff at Barcelona airport have announced a two-day strike for the weekend of July 27 and 28, which could have a knock-on effect on other airlines.
Passengers are advised to leave plenty of extra time if they plan to fly on either day.
Employees have aimed for the first of the busiest weeks of the summer for maximum impact, citing 'talks having broken down' between staff and management of the Spanish-owned airline.
The 2,000 or so ground staff on Iberia's payroll say they are overworked and need more employees to be taken on, since passenger traffic has increased dramatically at Barcelona's El Prat airport, especially now high season has started.
They claim Iberia's management has 'systematically failed to comply' with deals struck between them and staff unions last year, which allowed them to call off a planned four-day summer strike.
Iberia workers deal with about two-thirds of all ground staff duties at Barcelona airport.
As is often the case, the industrial action may be halted at the last minute if employees and the company can reach an agreement.
