Monforte del Cid is a municipality in the Valencian Community, Spain, located in the interior of the province of Alicante, in the Medio Vinalopó region.

Monforte owes its name to the Sierra del Cid, where a legend associates this geographical feature with the figure of the medieval knight. According to historical records from the city of Alicante in the thirteenth century, the town received the name of Nompot. Because it lies at the foot of a mountain crowned by a fortress, the name changed to Monfort, and the Spanish form of Monforte was adopted. Since there were other towns with the same name, at the beginning of the 20th century it received the appendix of Cid, in reference to the Sierra del Cid that rises nearby and recalls the exploits of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar in the province of Alicante.
