Relleu (which in Valencian means "relief" or "relevo") owes its name to the rugged topography that shapes its municipal term. It is a town of Muslim origin, whose inhabitants built the castle of Relleu. After the conquest of the region by the troops of Jaime I of Aragon, it was granted in ownership to Bernardo de Sarriá. Ecclesiastically, it depended on the parish of Finestrat until the year 1535. It was a place of Moriscos, constituted in 1609 by 170 houses, according to the Caracena Census of that same year, dependent on Cocentaina. After their expulsion, they took refuge in the mountains and revolted against that order. Only 15 families of old Christians remained in the town. Relleu is located in the center of a valley surrounded by mountains such as Cabezón de Oro (1209 m.), the Sierra de la Grana (1112 m.), and the Sierra del Aguilar, which is 889 meters high. The best way to access Relleu is by leaving from Villajoyosa and taking the road that connects Sella with Orcheta (CV-770).
