Aguilas is located at the southernmost point of the Murcia region, covers a 28 km coastline and is guarded by the beautiful castle of San Juan de las Águilas. This city has been populated since the Paleolithic, and many other ancient cultures such as the Argarian, Phoenician, Roman and Islamic cultures have also left their remains here, with particular emphasis on the Roman remains found from the 1st to the 4th century, including the Roman baths.
During a monumental tour of the city, the town hall stands out, a building from the 16th century. XIX neo-Mudejar style, located in the Plaza de España, an area with ancestral gardens and an old fountain with a swan, better known as the Pava de la Balsa. Some modernist buildings surround the square, as well as the 17th century San José church. XIX, where the image of the Virgin of Sorrows, patron saint of the city, is preserved. The old part of the city still preserves the atmosphere of the fishing districts, dedicated to fishing, and is crowned by the castle-fortress of San Juan de Águilas. This tower-fortress was built around 1579 for defensive purposes and was later rebuilt in the 17th century. On the Paseo de Parra stands the Railway Monument, an example of the importance that this means of transport had for the population. As a modern city, Águilas was born from the enlightened thinking of Carlos III and his ministers Aranda and Floridablanca, who were looking for a port of departure for the fruit and vegetable products of the Lorca plain, with Águilas being the natural outlet for the entire region. The new city, with a rectilinear layout, became a flourishing commercial enclave that reached its peak in the 19th century with the exploitation of silver, lead and iron and the construction of the railway and the Hornillo pier by English companies. Today, Águilas retains its seafaring tradition and its deep vocation as a tourist destination.
