Description
Authentic historic mansion | mountain views
With its 14th century tower and historic mansion, with large courtyard, from the 16th century, this is a unique opportunity. It has always been a family residence since its original construction. Its history has dictated that it is still substantially preserved in authentic condition.
With five floors in total, the first floor of over 500 square metres contains most of the main rooms in this historic setting. In total the palace has 1,892 square metres built, without counting the large courtyard, and 3,136 square metres if the courtyard is included. The large auxiliary building (to be completely refurbished inside), La Casina, has 266 square metres over 2 floors. The property has more than 78,000 square metres of land around it.
The palace would benefit from some sensitive renovations.
The extensive lands that come with the property are not currently buildable. However, similar properties have been allowed some new construction, as long as it is in-keeping, to foment tourism, in the case that it would be converted into a hotel. There is already an existing additional building, separate from the main house, but within the grounds, that could be converted to additional accommodation. There was a study to convert to a luxury hotel, which would have 42 rooms.
History
This mansion palace belonged to the prestigious economist and writer Valentín Andrés Álvarez. It has remained in the hands of the same family from 1883 to the present day.
Garcí Fernández de la Doriga, who in 1378 represented Salas in the General Assembly of Asturian council, was from here. The different coats of arms bear witness to multiple lineages: García de Doriga, Valdés, Tineo, Queipo de Llano, Quirós and Miranda.
It was the father-in-law of Valentín Andrés and son-in-law of Fernández Bao, Indalecio Corugedo Fernández, who carried out the integral renovations of the complex in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in accordance with the taste of the time.
The French-style park, the modernist dining room and the grandiose bathroom brought from the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 are the result of this period.
In more recent times, Valentín Andrés Álvarez, a disciple of José Ortega y Gasset, would receive countless friends for pleasant get-togethers washed down with cider made on the property, such as Federico García Lorca. ‘Inside its high tower, we used to play a game of billiards': writer Benjamín Jarnés.
A clear example of a medieval stately building, the Doriga palace has a square tower built at the end of the 14th century (it was one of the few towers that the Catholic Monarchs did not order to be demolished to prevent aristocratic rebellions) and a 16th century palace that is structured around a courtyard with large Tuscan columns that support the entablature of the open corridor of the main floor.
Surrounded by a park enclosed by a crenellated wall and with a stately gateway also dating from the 16th century, it contains an annexe building, which is the work of the prestigious architect Luis Bellido, author among other works of the Matadero de Madrid, now a cultural centre.
In short, we find ourselves with an interesting complex, maintained for centuries as a dwelling in private hands, which allows us to admire, in a good state of conservation, coffered ceilings, wooden floors and original furniture from the 16th century onwards.
