Situated on a hilltop and surrounded by marvellous stone windmills, the medieval town of Montuiri is a prime example of traditional rural Mallorca. It is located 30 kilometres east of Palma in the centre of the island on the main road from Palma to Manacor and also lends its name to the small municipality that surrounds it.
Montuiri was first officially mentioned in 1329, but there are also signs of settlement in the Bronze Age - including one of the most important archaeological sites in the whole of Mallorca. The town's name comes from Latin and literally means ‘mountain town’, and the famous eight windmills in the Molinar neighbourhood are the symbol of the town.

The windmills have not been in operation since the 1920s, but Montuiri still produces grain and almonds, as it has done for centuries. Today, the village is primarily a residential area and as such is one of the most popular in the centre of Mallorca.
