Somontín is a picturesque village characterised by hilly streets, whitewashed houses, and a calm, tranquil atmosphere, dominated by the parish church with its original tower. The origins of the village date back to Roman times in the 2nd century BC, although it was originally located further south. It appears to have been an important settlement, as the emperor Marcus Aurelius authorised it to mint coins. During the early Al-Andalus period, the village moved to its current location, where it was easier to defend and benefited from an abundant water supply. In the 9th century, the Hisn Somontán, a fortified stronghold, was established.
