The children at the Hilarión Gimeno state-run junior school in Zaragoza will not be singing any Christmas carols this year after it was decided to cancel Christmas celebrations because they are a lay school.
The proposal was originally made by the teachers back in October, and later approved by the school board despite opposition from the parents' association. The school's headmaster explained that there were a number of reasons for the decision, one of which is "lack of space."
Some teachers also said that the extra work involved in celebrating Christmas, gave them less time to prepare their lessons. The parents organised a petition that was signed by more than 200 protesters.
Christmas carols were also cancelled at the school last year, although the children were allowed to sing seasonal songs, most of which are in English, which is not in itself an issue as the school is bilingual.
The regional ombudsman for Aragón pronounced yesterday that "while nobody can be made to celebrate Christmas, by the same token, nobody can forbid anyone to do so if they so wish."
