There was huge disappointment in Granada as the Alhambra Palace failed to achieve a place among the New Seven Wonders of the World list.
Regional Culture minister, Rosa Torres, who was in Lisbon for the unveiling ceremony at the Stadium of Light last night, admitted her disappointment: "We always kept our feet on the ground and knew it would be difficult to make it onto the list," but insisted that the Alhambra deserved to be on the list, before concluding that "nobody can deny that it is the Eighth Wonder."
Other favourites to fail to make the list include the statues on Easter Island and the Acropolis.
The winners were: The Great Wall of China, Petra City in Jordania, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Machu Pichu (Peru), The Colisseum (Rome), the Maya temple in Chiechen Itzá (México) and the Taj Mahal.
